What is the use of a water conditioner? Do we really need it for our aquarium?

Water conditioner is a type of liquid that is used to treat tap water by neutralizing chlorine and heavy metal compounds before adding into aquarium. Easy to say, it make your water safe for the fish to live in. Nowadays, some of the water conditioner even help to promote the fish to produce protective slime on their body and also create the most suitable environment for fishes to live in.

When to use water conditioner:

  • During water change or setting up of new tank;

  • Removing chlorine and chloramine;

  • Detoxifying ammonia, nitrite & nitrate;

  • Removing heavy metal / chemical;

  • Provide protection and reduction of stress.

During water change, water conditioners need to be added into your tank before adding new water. While setting up a new tank, water conditioner can be added after filling up water in your new tank, later on fishes can be added in.

How much water conditioner or anti-chlorine is needed for my tank?

The amount of water conditioner that your tank needs depends on the water volume of your tank and the ratio of the water conditioner to water stated by the product. Different water conditioners have different ratio. Therefore, you should always refer to the products and calculate the amount needed for your tank.

For example:

  1. Seachem Prime water conditioner (5ml treat 200L of water), tank volume 60L

Amount needed for the tank : 200L/5ml = 40L/1ml

          = 1ml treat 40L

 60L = 60L/40L*1

                  = 1.5ml

  1. Aquanice H20 water conditioner (10ml treat 100L), tank volume 60L

Amount needed for the tank: 100L/10ml = 10L/1ml

           = 1ml treat 10L

  60L = 60L/10L*1

          = 6ml
