Hang-On-Back (HOB) Filters
 

Pros:

  • Easy to install and maintain.

  • Does not take up space inside the tank.
     

Cons:

  • Can be noisy.

  • Visible from the back of the tank.

  • Limited capacity for media.

Canister Filters
 

Pros:

  • Powerful and efficient at all three types of filtration (mechanical, chemical, biological).

  • Can be customized with different filter media.

  • Quiet operation.
     

Cons:

  • More expensive than other types of filters.

  • More complex to set up and maintain.

  • Requires space outside the tank.

Internal Filters

  • Affordable.
     

Cons:

  • Requires an air pump to operate.

Sump Filters

  • Excellent for large tanks and marine setups.

  • Can house a large amount of filter media.

  • Easy to hide additional equipment (heaters, protein skimmers).

  • Enhances overall water volume, stabilizing tank conditions.
     

Cons:

  • Requires a drilled tank or overflow box.

  • More complex to set up and maintain.

  • Expensive.
